There are regular meetings across Auckland, including separate policy meetings and new members evenings.
Councillors on the new Auckland supercity will have their hands tied when it comes to running the city, due to the unprecedented powers granted to the Minister of Local Government in a Bill to be debated today, the Green Party said.
The Green Party has been briefed about proposals to restructure the Auckland Council along corporate lines, and place control of Auckland’s assets in the hands of eight companies, Green Party Local Government Spokesperson Sue Kedgley said today.
The Green Party continues to protest in Parliament at the undemocratic way the Government is ramming through Super City legislation that eliminates eight elected Auckland Councils, and cedes dictatorial powers to a Transition Agency. “The only power left to us to protest is to delay the passage of this iniquitous legislation,” Green Party Local Government Spokesperson Sue Kedgley said today.
Following a record US$25 spike in the price of a barrel of oil, Green Party Co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons has released a series of city maps which show how well, or badly, New Zealand’s suburban populations are prepared for rising oil prices.
While the Greens have suggested slowing down controversial cuts to tree protection, National are hell bent on fast tracking changes. They are using urgency in Parliament and are moving an amendment that will remove tree protection almost immediately, Russel Norman said today.
It is tragic that the National Party values Rodney Hide’s opinion more than that of the people of Auckland. The majority of submitters to the Auckland Governance Committee, Maori and Pakeha alike, endorsed appropriate Maori representation, but instead we’re getting weak excuses and false promises.
Local Government Minister Rodney Hide is hiding behind the Maori seats in Auckland to cover much deeper failures in his radical right wing agenda, the Green Party said today. It would be a win/win situation for all involved if Minister Hide submitted his resignation, and John Key accepted his kind offer.

Thank you to all the people who have helped us run a fantastic campaign in Mt Albert and to all of you who voted for Russel on Saturday. Our result was twice the percentage that we got in the electorate vote in 2008 and a fact that hasn't had much coverage is that we came second in around 30% of the polling booths. This is a huge achievement and clearly makes NZ politics a three party race, this has been echoed in recent media coverage and debates where only the Greens, Labour and National have been included.
The release of an obscure cabinet paper revealing a plan to gut local government and open the door to privatisation of assets has Russel Norman calling on the Prime Minister to rein in Rodney Hide. The Cabinet paper wants to implement ACT Party policy by narrowing the powers of local government and making it easier to sell Auckland’s $23 billion in public assets. The paper proposes to do this without public consultation.
