Campaigns

These are the top issues the Greens are campaigning on. For all the issues we cover, see the list on the right.

Climate Change
Burning oil and other fossil fuels is changing the atmosphere. This is leading to melting ice caps, rising sea levels and drastically altered weather patterns. New Zealand needs to act now to help reverse this change as part of the international community's effort to avert disaster.

Peak Oil
The New Zealand energy situation is not a healthy one. Maui gas has been wasted and not enough has been done to encourage conservation, or renewable energy. New Zealand's agriculture, transport and power infrastructure has been built on cheap energy which is ending.

Food
The Green Party wants all food to be safe to eat, and wants everyone to be able to know exactly what they're eating and where it's from. We want all growing of genetically engineered food crops banned and all imported products containing GE to be labelled. We want the overuse of antibiotics in farms to be regulated and seek to reduce the pesticide residues in food.

Water
Water is essential for life and there will be more competition for it in the future as climate change adds to the already great pressure on water resources. We have gone from having iconic pure rivers and lakes to a state where 95% of our rivers and streams are too polluted to swim in or drink. Dirty industry and intensive agriculture has to stop abusing our water.

Transport
Transport lies at the heart of so many other issues; climate change, urban planning, rural economies and food production to mention a few. A Green approach to transport focuses on restoring a heart to our towns and cities and connecting local communities. We need to start adapting the success stories from around the world to New Zealand.
