Education in New Zealand

What is a real education?

We've asked those most affected – young people themselves – what they need from a real education.

Adults often get bogged down debating assessment methods, and forget to ask young people what they need from our education system.

Over two years, Green Party Education Spokesperson Catherine Delahunty has visited 17 learning environments and asked students for their views. Their answers are summarised in this report, 'What is a Real Education?'

It shows that young people are concerned about the three ‘Rs’ – but not just reading, writing and arithmetic. They want respect, good relationships and an education that is relevant.

They are also concerned about resources and the vast disparities in resource levels between different schools.

We hope this report will become a great resource for young people, teachers, parents, MPs, and officials. Please feel free to download it, print it, and share it widely.

We'd love to hear your thoughts about real education. Join the conversation with Catherine on Facebook and Twitter, or email catherine.delahunty@parliament.govt.nz.
