In 2009 the Green Party negotiated a deal with the Government to invest $300 million in warm, healthy homes.
It has been a great success. Over 150,000 homes have been retro-fitted with insulation, and more than half of these are occupied by people on low incomes. Over 4 years the programme will retrofit 180,000 homes in total.
It is an example of smart Green economics at work. The Government estimated that it has created 2,000 jobs in the building sector. Over 30 years, the benefits of these 80,000 retrofits will be worth over half a billion ($500m) in economic benefits: both in energy savings and health benefits.
The Greens have campaigned for years on the economic, social and environmental benefits of such a programme, and recognise it as a key plank in any Green New Deal as it is addressing both the climate crisis and the economic crisis at the same time.
