Play the 'coal-in-the-hole' game
Leaving the coal in the hole is the best solution for the climate as it locks up that CO2 underground. The Southland Lignite deposits are the lowest quality coal and should be left in the ground.
It makes no sense to destroy valuable farmland to dig up coal that harms our 100% Pure brand. Instead, we need to invest in jobs and a vision to create a future which we all can enjoy.
We all have to do our fair share to ensure a stable climate we need to utilise our renewable resources not burn dirty coal. The ETS is not reducing emissions but offering subsidises to increase them. Solid Energy has several proposals which will make it impossible to reduce our green house gas emissions.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has produced a comprehensive report showing that all uses of lignite will increase New Zealand's emissions.
Jeanette Fitzsimons takes this further by looking at the context of global emissions. She says that we should consider the full amount of emissions, not just the differences from the alternatives; if we don't use it, someone else will.
Solid Energy's claims that its proposals are fully carbon compliant may be true, but they are definitely not carbon neutral. They mention carbon sequestration as an option but cannot provide a working example of this technology, especially in an earthquake-prone country.
