Jan says...

Mana is a place of exceptional natural beauty with a rich mix of cultures and talented people.

The community has survived tough times and reshaped itself. I want to help build on those strengths so all the people of Mana to thrive.

I'm new to this side of politics and I am prepared to listen and discuss solutions with everyone. I've been recognised with a national award as a social entrepreneur - this basically means I'm someone who can develop innovative new solutions to long standing problems. I want to turn this skill towards reshaping our national policies, funding, and legislation so that it works for everyone.

The Greens have a history of making change from outside Government. We offer fresh solutions based on good evidence. For example we convinced the Labour and then the National Government to put $323 million into a home insulation scheme and so far, thanks to the Greens, over 50,000 New Zealanders now have healthier, warmer homes that are cheaper to heat.

In Mana the Greens believe we can build on the community's strengths and tackle inequality, provide affordable, fast and efficient public transport, and build community and economy opportunity around our stunning waterways. We have a whole range of initiatives to help achieve these goals.

If you want fresh solutions and a real choice for Mana, vote Jan Logie.

I'm Jan Logie, the Green Party candidate for Mana.

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge Rangitaane, Ngaati Toa Rangatira and Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai for allowing me a place to stand proudly in this beautiful electorate of Mana.

I rent a cute little cottage in Paekakariki and work in Wellington so I really understand the value of good trains and buses.

I grew up in Invercargill and spent most of my summer holidays camping in either Fiordland or the Lakes District. In many ways it was probably the quintessential kiwi upbringing that all too many children in this country now miss out on. It gave me a passion for this gorgeous country that has never waned in all my years and travels.

Family

My mum was a nurse and my dad an electrician who worked for the Electricity Department. They had high hopes for my brother and I and have stood by me all through my life.

Maybe it was the influence of my missionary grandparents or some of the challenging times in my youth that helped me really appreciate how important it is to stand by people through tough times. I'm convinced (and there is good evidence to support me) that if we look after the most vulnerable we will all be safer, healthier, happier and the environment will also be better off.

Working life

I've spent most of my working life working with women and young people as a women's refuge coordinator, setting up one of New Zealand's first youth health services, and as the Executive Director of the YWCA of Aotearoa-New Zealand. Through this work and lobbying for changes to the Domestic Violence Act, paid parental leave, prostitution law reform, youth health services, and many other causes I have realised what a difference good MPs, who will communicate openly and honestly and work hard, can make. I would love to take that role for the people of Mana.

I've worked for the Green Party in Parliament. Working for Sue Bradford, who is the only MP in this country's history to get three private members bills passed through parliament in one term, I learnt how to negotiate with other parties and get things done even when we're not in Government.

Green solutions for Mana

Three Green solutions that I think would add value to Mana -

1. Let's tackle inequality, by, for example, upgrading and building more state houses. This will create more jobs, lower health costs and energy bills, reduce days off school and absences from work as well green house gas emissions.

2. Shift a proportion, say a tenth, of the money spent on roads into better trains and buses. This will create local jobs and reduce costs for local businesses, allowing them to employ more people and make sure we can all get where we want to go, when we need to.

3. Put money into cleaning up Pauatahanui inlet and the harbour and work with local community groups and businesses all the way up the coast to develop the tourism potential. The Green Party offers new solutions to old problems. We are a strong voice for the environment and for people who are not usually heard.

We have solutions that will work for every New Zealander, not just a lucky few.

New Zealand is an increasingly unequal society.

Inequality robs children of a fair start in life and creates problems for all of us. The evidence for this is compelling. Cutting benefits won't work. Reducing GST on fresh food won't work.

It's going to take fresh solutions to reduce inequalities and that's what the Greens offer.

Affordable fruit and veges

We can make fresh fruit and vegetables much more affordable by regulating supermarkets.

Rather than taking GST off fresh fruit and vegetables that will save 15% at the most.

We're advocating regulation of supermarkets that currently mark up fruit and vegetables by 100-500% and yet sell alcohol almost at cost.

$10,000 tax-free

We want the first $10,000 to be tax free for all New Zealanders and we would replace the tax take with a capital gains tax on investment properties.

We all want the best for the next generation, but at the moment, 140,000 of our most vulnerable families are slipping between the cracks. Kids from low income families whose parents have jobs get support from the in-work tax credit, but kids whose parents are on the benefit miss out on this support.

Children

With one in five New Zealand children living in poverty, there's no excuse for treating these kids differently

I will advocate strongly to ensure that the children of beneficiaries also get the support they need to grow up safe and healthy.

Housing

We want to build 6000 eco state houses that suit a variety of families over the next three years. This will create jobs and improve health, educational outcomes, and improve productivity as well as lowering power costs and CO2 emissions.

A Mana without inequality will be healthier, safer, greener, happier and more productive.

I take the train into Wellington for work. It's unreliable, expensive and takes far too long. I don't have a car but it often seems a bit silly to spend so much money and time on public transport.

It's not enough to tell people "you should take public transport" - we have to make it a sensible option. 12 peak time trains, with 12 carriages, would carry 10,000 passengers and take 8-9,000 cars off the road.

Stop the Sandhills Expressway

The Sandhills Expressway will demolish houses, sever the community and devastate the local ecology. It will cost more to build than its estimated economic benefits.
The Expressway and Transmission Gully will increase congestion.
The projected 20% increase in traffic and 13% decrease in rail patronage if these roads are built will mean an extra 40,000 cars clogging up the motorway.

The Green Solution

Build the 2 lane local Western Link Road, improve State Highway One, and transform our dilapidated rail network into a fast, reliable commuter rail system.

• Trains that run on time
• Affordable fares
• More peak time services
• Better park and ride facilities
• Integrated ticketing
• Better bus connections

Convenient and affordable trains and less road congestion will benefit the economy, jobs, public health, our kids, communities and the environment.

We need fresh thinking on Kapiti's transport.

The natural setting, history and mix of people of inlet and harbour are unique in New Zealand and are under-valued and under-used.

We'll utilize the uniqueness of the Pauahatanui Inlet and the harbour to make it a draw-card recreation centre and create jobs.

We'll clean up the inlet and harbour to enhance the natural setting and new recreational opportunities to create jobs and a real community asset.

This will create a virtuous cycle of benefit for the economy, jobs, public health, our kids, communities and the environment.
