Support for the Animal Welfare (Treatment of Animals) Amendment Bill

SAFE logo

"I am is delighted that Sue Kedgley's Animal Welfare Amendment Bill is now in front of Parliament. This Bill may well be the best opportunity factory farmed animals have to be freed from their miserable lives. SAFE is aware that factory farming industries will be lobbying hard to see this Bill fail, so we will urge all our members and supporters to encourage their MP's to get behind the Bill and do the right thing for animals. It is a sad indictment on our society that our animal welfare legislation allows practices that deny animals the right to be able to turn around or walk. Sue's Bill will rectify this injustice and I hope that other members of Parliament will listen to the majority of New Zealanders who want to see an end to cruel factory farming practices by supporting this important Bill."

"The Royal New Zealand SPCA supports the principle of the Animal Welfare (Treatment of Animals) Amendment Bill. The Animal Welfare Act 1999 is quite specific in its purpose to provide both for the physical, health and behavioural needs of all animals, and to prevent suffering and injury to any animal, without any exception as to species. Existing Codes of Welfare in respect of some animals, specifically those subjected to intensive farming practices, including pigs and hens, are in clear breach of the Act, and will remain so until such time as they recognise the pain and suffering caused to these animals, and the deprivation of their physical, health and behavioural needs. Accordingly such codes must be brought into line with the Act within the earliest possible time-frame"
