The Mokihinui River on the South Island's West Coast is one of New Zealand's most valuable wild rivers. It flows from Kahurangi National Park and passes through a magnificent gorge. It is home to twelve species of native fish including the chronically endangered and endemic longfinned eel.
The river is under threat from an 85m hydro-electricity dam proposed by Meridian Energy. This dam would flood 300 hectares of prime conservation estate. The West Coast Regional Council has granted Meridian the resource consents they need to construct the dam. However, the Department of Conservation has lodged an appeal against the resource consent decision with the Environment Court. The case is expected to be heard in the Environment Court in 2012.
We don't need to dam our last remaining wild rivers. Our electricity needs can be met by efficiency measures and truly renewable generation. Other electricity projects are already consented and underway on the West Coast that have the capacity meet the regions power needs.
We will continue to fight the dam proposal until it is withdrawn!
