We believe that the health and safety of workers in underground mines needs to be improved now — not when the Royal Commission eventually reports back.
West Coast-based Green MP Kevin Hague has been putting Kate Wilkinson, the Minister responsible for the safety of these workers, under intense pressure in the House in recent weeks.
Kevin's revelations about Pike River survivors being met with answerphone messages when calling for assistance show the dire state of our current mine safety regime.
National's health and safety reforms in the 1990s moved the onus for safety from independent inspectors to employers. For the sake of workers' safety, it is time to move back to a system that puts safety first.

Selling off the businesses that New Zealanders own together means more foreign ownership and less accountability to what's best for New Zealanders. It also means more profits shifting offshore. We say 'Keep it Kiwi'.
