Kia ora
We have just finished rolling out our three main priorities for the upcoming election: kids, rivers and jobs.
A big component of our plan to help get more kiwis working in clean, green jobs involves New Zealand having a world class employment relations framework with strong unions.
To do this we want the 90 day probation period removed for new employees.
We also consider New Zealand is lagging behind other countries such as Germany where there is far greater worker participation on company boards.
A key plank of our jobs package is strengthening collective bargaining rights — as recommended by not just the International Labour Organisation but also the International Monetary Fund. Backing this up we consider New Zealand should also implement international standards on the right to strike, worker accident compensation, pay equity, flexible working hours, and breastfeeding breaks.
It is important that future governments recognise that supporting workers means working with unions rather than attacking them and workers' rights.
