Sue Bradford stands for Auckland mayoralty

Subject: Green Events

Sue Bradford today joined the race for the Auckland mayoralty with a Green Party campaign launch at noon in the Ellen Melville Square, off High St, Auckland.

Ms Bradford was introduced by Green Party Co-Leader Rod Donald MP. Although better known as an unemployed rights activist, Sue was a founding member of the Green Party in 1990, and is running for mayor on a Green platform.

She will be campaigning for a "new environment for Auckland - a city forus all". "I want the council to involve everyone in the life of the city, not just the big commercial interests," Ms Bradford said. "I want the Britomart project stopped. We don't need an underground venture with a huge car park. What we need is a people-friendly city with a functional downtown terminal linking trains, buses and ferries and urgent action on rapid rail, not more waffle about it.

"We need to clean up our city. For example, we can't continue to allow raw sewage and polluted stormwater to pour into our harbour. I want to lead a council which is committed to working with community organisations and local people to deal with social and environmental problems, rather than to selling off its housing stock and ignoring the needs of people on low incomes."

The Green Party is also involved in the City Vision ticket for the Auckland council. Sue will be supporting their challenge to the entrenched C and R Council.
