Transport Policy launch: The Great Waikanae to Wellington Commuter Transport Challenge
To launch the Green Party's Transport Policy, two Green candidates are having a Waikanae to Wellington commuter transport race tomorrow.
Green Party Otaki candidate Gary Williams will take the train from Waikanae to Wellington. He will try to get there ahead of the Greens' Mana candidate Robert Shaw, who will travel all the way by car.
The race will kick off at 7.15am from the Waikanae Railway station on Friday 19 November, 1999 and will finish at Parliament buildings at approximately 8.25am.
The race will be strictly umpired. Robert Shaw will be accompanied by a judge to make sure he travels at a normal speed where traffic allows.
Presiding at the finish line will be Sue Kedgley, the Green Party's Transport spokesperson.
Ms Kedgley said the race will highlight the value of having peak hour commuter passenger transport into Wellington, and the need to upgrade it.
"The Green Party supports public transport initiatives to reduce traffic congestion on our roads and improve the quality of our air," she said.
Details of the Green Party's Transport Policy will be announced tomorrow.
