Nandor calls for cannabis cases to clog courts

Green Drug Law Reform Spokesperson Nandor Tanczos will speak at J Day celebrations for cannabis law reform in Albert Park, Auckland, this Saturday 4 May between Noon and 1pm.

J Day events will be held in main centres around the country and in over 190 cities around the world.

Nandor will speak about the Health Select Committee inquiry into cannabis and how people can keep up the pressure for change in election year. He will also discuss new research from the Christchurch School of Medicine which shows cannabis laws are racist and fail to reduce drug abuse.

"Despite this latest research showing that prohibition is a failure, despite an inquiry into the legal status of cannabis and despite general acceptance that the law must change, ordinary people are still being busted en masse for possession of a plant."

Nandor will also be speaking in support of NORML's campaign to encourage people on personal cannabis charges to clog the court system.

"Prohibition continues because people go along with it. There is no justification for criminalising the more than 50 per cent of New Zealanders who have tried cannabis.

"If victims of prohibition chose, quite legally, to refuse to enter a plea for minor cannabis charges and to defend themselves in court the courts would become constipated. Police and Courts already spend stupid amounts of money on busting people for personal use of cannabis. This action would make prohibition unenforceable."
