New environment centres are key to conservation: Greens

Green Party MP Metiria Turei is pleased to be part of the opening of the Nelson Environment Centre – at 215 Akersten St Nelson – at 1pm today.

Mrs Turei, the Party’s Conservation Spokesperson, says the Greens have been key to the support and development of environment centres for many years.

She is pleased to see their continued growth, given former Green Party Co-Leader the late Rod Donald was the first paid director of the Christchurch Environment Centre in 1976.

“Rod first secured funding in 2000, again in 2002 and this year the Greens obtained a further $800,000 for Environment centres around the country,” Mrs Turei says.

“The Greens have supported an investment in environmental centres to build up community understanding and support for conserving nature and looking after the environment.

“The centres are a key community development tool as well as functioning as an environmental gathering and information sharing point for the community.

“I’m rapt to be part of this exciting initiative that has so much potential for promoting conservation and care of our precious natural environment.”
