Asset stripping not good for Wellington community: Greens

Green Party MP Sue Kedgley says news that the Mount Victoria community centre Crossways has been sold to a private buyer is devastating and she is incredulous the Wellington City Council allowed this valuable and well used community asset to be sold.

“This is terrible news for the community, and for volunteers who have spent thousands of hours trying to save Crossways.

“The Council's decision was utterly short sighted and almost incomprehensible. For a few hundred thousand dollars it could have guaranteed an excellent and well used local facility in Mount Victoria,” Ms Kedgley says.

“There is a serious shortage of space for community meetings in Wellington, and I cannot believe that the Council has not lent its support to retaining this valuable community space. “Such centres are essential meeting places for ordinary citizens. And the absence of a neighbourhood meeting place really undermines a local community.”
