The West Coast Comes to Christchurch (featuring Kevin Hague & Debs Martin)

Subject: Conservation

Wed, 22 Oct 2008 at 7:30pm

The West Coast of the South Island has some of the most significant wilderness areas in New Zealand: wild rivers, unique wildlife and pristine native forests.

However open cast mining and hydro proposals threaten to destroy many of these unique places. Must these areas be sacrificed for economic developement?

Kevin Hague, Green Party Candidate for the West Coast/Tasman and No. 7 on the Green Party list will discuss a few of these BIG issues facing the West Coast and what the alternatives are.

Joining him will be:

Debs Martin (Forest & Bird Field Officer from Nelson) who will outline the Mokihinui Dam proposal- which if it goes ahead will impact a 14km stretch of wild river and flood 300ha of ancient native forests that have taken hundreds of years to form.

and

Graham Jury (Save Happy Valley Spokesperson) will provide us with a brief update on Happy Valley and neighboring mine proposals.

There will be time for questions and discussion as time permits.

This is a public meeting. All very welcome
