Taumarere and Kawakawa Rivers, Northland
The Taumarere is a taonga to Ngati Hine and they won an Environment Court case ten years ago which directed the regional council to acknowledge the special connection between Ngati Hine and the river. They have embarked on some planting and fencing but they have been unable to protect and clean up the river. The combination of agricultural intensification, draining of wetlands, sewerage, cows in the river, and forest clearance is just too big.
Hunt for minerals underway in Schedule Four land
Information obtained by the Green Party has revealed 21 current mineral permits for prospecting and exploration in 42 areas protected from mining by Schedule Four of the Crown Minerals Act. More than half (eleven) of the permits have been issued since the election of the National-led Government.
Green Party MP Welcomes Progress on Contaminated Sites
The solution to the safe clean-up of more than 36 contaminated timber treatment sites around Whakatäne came a step closer this week.
Green Party toxics spokesperson Catherine Delahunty says that a hui of sawmill workers, tangata whenua, scientists, community and local government made great progress identifying bioremediation* (dealing with chemically contaminated sites by using bacteria to break down the toxic compounds) options for Whakatäne sites.
