I work well in a team environment, although I also enjoy self-motivated challenges. My written and oral skills are strong, and I am comfortable with public speaking, writing documents, and policy analysis. I have a realistic expectation of the requirements of parliamentary life. I am very interested in the Committee processes of Parliament.

Background

Mikaere's background is that of a Maori child of the urban migration. He has an active affiliation with his tribal roots and is committed to Maori development - both tribal and urban. He was born in Henderson in 1969 and hails from Ngati Rongomai, Te Arawa. He has a background as a Programme Manager at Auckland Institute of Technology , where he helped develop an NZQA-approved Bachelor of Maori Studies programme. He now works as a software developer specialising in retail banking and related financial products. He is married with two children, three cats and a dog.

Community involvements

Mikaere was on the Richmond Road School Board Of Trustees from 2004 - 2007, and also worked as a Business Analyst for Te Whanau o Waipareira Trust. He is still actively involved in his childrens' school in various projects and initiatives. He was a member of the London Maori Club between 1996-97 and the Mt Albert Ratepayers Association in 2004.

Interests/Hobbies

In 1995, Mikaere went trekking in the Himalayas where he and his mates put down a hangi in the snow at 13,000 feet. That's higher than Aoraki, and possibly the highest hangi ever. Mikaere is currently the Equipment Officer for the New Zealand Live Action Roleplaying Society.

Additional

For Milkaere, being Green is all about kaitiakitanga - guardianship. He says: "we need to ensure that future generations will inherit a world that provides for freedom, opportunity and prosperity. And the only way to do that is for the current generation to take responsibility for our world as it is today, and that we make incremental, evolutionary changes that bring about the social and ecological justices we all envisage".
