Gallagher, Shane
Shane has had a varied working life, from working in fast food restaurants to being a maitre'd in one of Scotland's top restaurants, as a stagehand to organising the first drama festival for Ireland's technical colleges, as an English teacher to working at the Scots National Dictionary, as a web developer to analysing the speech patterns in English and Scots Gaelic. Currently Shane works at Otago university and owns Ali McD Model Agency with his business partner Aliana McDaniel.
Background
Shane Gallagher was raised in Ireland by his mother and grandfather and is the eldest of three boys. He was educated in an avant garde school in Dublin, Sandymount High School, and went on to study at University College Dublin where he graduated with a double honours degree in English and Linguistics. He then went on to study and work at Edinburgh University and the University of York in the field of Linguistics. Shane emigrated to New Zealand seven years ago and has a son who is eight years old who was born here in Dunedin.
Community involvements
Shane has worked in the trade union movement since he emigrated to New Zealand. He recently resigned from his position as President of the Association of University Staff, which he held for two years.
Interests/Hobbies
Shane is into reading, cycling, film, and tramping in the great New Zealand outdoors.
Additional
Shane has chosen to stand for the Green party this year for his son, nephews and nieces. He is deeply concerned about their future on a planet that is rapidly headed towards catastrophic climate change. Shane says that he "would like to see a world where children can swim in rivers and beaches without fear of toxins, eat food that is safe and healthy, and can breathe fresh clean air."
