Australian election highlights need for MMP

Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei congratulates the Australian Greens on their electoral success, pointing out that if Australia had a truly proportional system, the Australian Greens would have gained sixteen more seats in the lower house. This is a clear example of why all of us should vote to keep MMP here in New Zealand!

Paula Bennett asks Iwi for a handout: Govt is broke

The person ultimately responsible for child abuse is the abuser. Holding individuals to account for their violence and cruelty is critical but more is necessary. We need to make families more resilient, build community responsibility to break the code of silence.

Australian result shows advantage of MMP

Whatever the final result of the Australian election, the advantage of New Zealand's proportional voting system MMP is very clear, said the Green Party today.

The outcome of the Australian election is not yet known, because like in the UK earlier this year, the election has resulted in a ‘hung' parliament. The two major parties together received 78 percent of the vote, and neither of them has a majority.

"New Zealanders can look to the Australian result to see why we need to vote to keep MMP next year," said Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei.

Greens saddened by death of Parihaka leader

The Green Party expressed sadness at the sudden passing of Te Miringa Hohaia yesterday. "This is a tragic loss for the people of Taranaki and for the whole country," Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei said.

Billboards designed to scare, not educate

The Coastal Coalition's billboards are divisive, dishonest and not helpful for resolving an important Treaty issue, the Green Party said today.

"John Ansell's bill boards are designed to scare instead of educate," Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei said.

Inequality in Aotearoa: imprisonment

We are debating the Future Focus bill in Parliament as I write. We know that last time there was work testing for sole parents there were serious concerns about child welfare. The bill denigrates the value of education for sole parents and their children. The bill is punitive, discriminatory and will massively increase poverty, increasing the gap between rich and poor.

Inequality in Aotearoa: updated statistics

A major report was released today.

Inequality, child poverty plateau under National

The latest Household Incomes in New Zealand report shows the gap between rich and poor has plateaued since John Key's Government came into office, the Green Party said today.

Inequality in Aotearoa: life expectancy again

There was an interesting report on Friday about the links between life expectancy, inequality, and smoking which revealed some pretty scary findings: the rich are living longer, the gap in life expectancy between rich and poor is growing, and so is the gap in life expectancy between Maori and non-Maori.<

Support foster parents and single parents

Extra support for foster parents is the right attitude, and one John Key's Government could extend to single parents, the Green Party said today.
