After the Pike River tragedy the government has instituted a Royal Commission of Inquiry.
The Government has refused to make any changes to the health and safety regulations in place at the time of the Pike River disaster until this commission reports back.
Through the 90s, the National Government decimated mine safety. The Government doesn't need to wait for the Royal Commission to make changes to improve mine safety.
When someone heads off to work in the morning, they have a right to expect that their workplace is as safe as it can possibly be, and that they will return home again after work, safe and well. Mine safety improvements need to be made as soon as possible.
