The Green Party is committing to a flourishing reo Māori in homes, in schools, and in communities across Aotearoa.
"Te reo Māori is a taonga. The Green Party will proudly fund te reo Māori initiatives to thrive for generations to come," says Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson.
“Teachers work tirelessly to elevate te reo Māori in their schools. Te Taura Whiri i te reo Māori have been kaitiaki of te reo Māori for decades. Te Mātāwai supports whānau, hapū and iwi to uplift te reo Māori in and with their communities.
“Christopher Luxon’s Government has failed to provide adequate funding for te reo Māori in our communities and has waged a culture war on the use of te reo Māori. Our reo must be treasured, and the Green Party will make sure that it is.
"A Green Party in Government will fund an additional $50m per year towards te reo Māori initiatives. This $50m will be made up of:
$30m per year to programmes that provide continuous education and professional development for teachers in te reo Māori; and
$20m per year to increase funding for Te Taura Whiri and Te Mātāwai.
"Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is a time to celebrate our reo, acknowledge the generations of people who got our reo to where it is now, and advocate for the future of our reo.
"Ake, Ake, Ake: A Forever Language. For our forever language to flourish, it must be properly funded to do so," says Davidson.
