Green Party gun petition

 

The Green Party welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement on planned gun control laws, Green Party Co-leader James Shaw said today.

“Banning military style semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles makes everyone safer. Banning these guns is the first step towards systemic changes to our gun laws,” says James Shaw.

“I welcome this announcement today, we just wish it wasn’t in such tragic circumstances.

New Government funding will bring together landholders, iwi and hapū, and others in the wider community to improve stream health in the Waikawa catchment, in the Manawatu-Wanganui region.

Associate Environment Minister Eugenie Sage announced that a $170,000 grant from Government’s Community Environment Fund would contribute to the Waikawa Stream Community Catchment Project. Others are contributing $90,000 - Horizons Regional Council ($45,000), Landcare Trust New Zealand ($30,000) and landholders ($15,000).

The Green Party are supporting co-leader James Shaw and his whānau following an unprovoked attack this morning. 

James Shaw is currently under observation in hospital and is unlikely to be back at Parliament today. 

“I’ve been in touch with James this morning and he’s doing okay after this morning's unprovoked attack. We thank everyone for their outpouring of aroha and have been passing this onto him and his whānau” said Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson.

The Green Party are today celebrating the single largest addition to a National Park in New Zealand’s history, with 64,400 hectares of land in the Mokihinui River catchment being added to Kahurangi National Park.

“It’s incredible to see the gorgeous Mokihinui Gorge protected for perpetuity with this massive addition to our the Kahurangi National Park. This is a massive win for our natural environment and I wish to congratulate Green Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage” says Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson.

Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage today announced the largest addition of land to an existing national park in New Zealand’s history.

A total of 64,400 hectares of conservation land in the Mokihinui River catchment on the West Coast north of Westport, including 15 km of riverbed, is being added to Kahurangi National Park.

“Adding this area, roughly half the size of Auckland City, to Kahurangi is the largest addition of land to an existing national park in New Zealand’s history,” Eugenie Sage said.

The Serious Fraud Office investigation into political donations received by the National Party is deeply alarming and highlights why we need stronger and more transparent political donation rules says Green Party Electoral Spokesperson Golriz Ghahraman.

“Currently there are too many grey areas in the donation rules which allow political parties to auction off our democracy to the highest bidder while hiding the donations.”

“This year, my partner and I have welcomed the birth of our first child. As a full time working mum, I rely on unpaid work by my partner to enable me to do my job,” says Ms Genter.

The Green Party welcomes the introduction of legislation to address the synthetic drugs crisis and broader addiction problems in Aotearoa. 

“Today we’re tabling the most fundamental change in drug law in New Zealand in over 30 years”, Green Party spokesperson on drug law reform Chlöe Swarbrick said. 

“Working with Police, the Government has developed a process to see that those caught in the web of addiction are supported into care and recovery, instead of being pushed into the criminal system, where problems often get far worse.

“National put the country through an MMP review that took thousands of public submissions and made a series of independent recommendations. Judith Collins then refused to bring these to Parliament. There was no genuine consultation.

“Tax evaders have been able to avoid paying their fair share of tax that go towards hospitals and schools, while the rest of us chip in.

“The announcement today – a collaboration between expanded networks of countries – will ensure this happens less and less.

“The Green Party has long advocated for changes to the tax system to ensure that everyone pays their fair share for the public services that improve the quality of life for everyone.
