Hon. James Shaw MP is Co-leader of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand and New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change and Associate Minister for the Environment (Biodiversity). He has previously also been Minister of Statistics and Associate Minister of Finance.

James has had a long association with the Green Party, having volunteered on the Wellington Central campaign in the 1990 General Election, when he was just seventeen. He ran his first campaign, for Wellington City Council, in 1992.

Prior to becoming an MP, James had a career in leadership development and sustainability, primarily based in London, where he lived from 1998 to 2010. Whilst living in the UK he completed a Master’s in sustainable development and business leadership at Bath University.

He moved back to New Zealand in 2010 to run for Parliament in the 2011 General Election. He was elected in 2014, becoming Green Party Co-leader in 2015.

In 2017 James led the Green Party into its first ever term in Government with Ministers. In 2020 he and Marama Davidson led the Greens back into Government, with an enlarged caucus, for a second term; something no other support party had previously accomplished.
