The Green Party is deeply concerned by Japan’s resumption of commercial whaling, Green Party Animal Welfare Spokesperson Gareth Hughes said today.

“This is a sad day for whales and a real blow to international efforts to protect these magnificent creatures.

“I am very disappointed by Japan’s decision to pull out of the International Whaling Commission after the International Court of Justice ruled their previous whaling program was not for scientific purposes.

The Green Party welcomes the re-opening of the Napier-Wairoa railway line announced today, said Green Party MP Gareth Hughes.

“The Greens are committed to regional rail, which should be the backbone of our transport system for people and freight.

“The Greens are pleased to be part of a Government that is upholding our commitment to restoring our railways in the regions.

“The restoration of this like will provide a huge boost to the local economy, it will create jobs and keep people connected in the regions.

The Green Party is welcoming the announcement by Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor to review New Zealand’s live animal exports rules.

“New Zealand’s live animal export laws are in serious need of an update to protect animal welfare and our agricultural brand,” Green Party Animal Welfare spokesperson Gareth Hughes said today.

“New Zealand exports tens of thousands of live animals for breeding purposes every year and these animals can face appalling treatment when they arrive in the importing country.”

The Green Party is glad to finally see the rollout of cameras on selected fishing boats but believes it needs to be scaled-up fast.

“We need cameras on all fishing boats as soon as possible to help stamp out illegal practices and protect our fisheries for future generations” says Green Party spokesperson for Fisheries, Gareth Hughes.

“The rollout in its current form is too generous with taxpayer’s money, too narrow and too slow.

News that OMV intend to start drilling in the Great South Basin is bad news for our planet, the Green Party said today.

“It is time to put a line in the sand on offshore oil and gas drilling,” Green Party Energy & Resources spokesperson Gareth Hughes says.

“Only the Green Party is committed to stop deep sea oil drilling. This isn’t the future we want for New Zealand or the world.

“The consent application announced today for oil drilling shows that last year’s ban on new permits needs to be strengthened.

We must stop cruelty in the name of ‘entertainment.’

The Green Party's rodeo animals protection bill would amend the Animal Welfare Act to outlaw the rodeo activities that cause the most pain and distress to animals - specifically calf roping, steer wrestling and the use of flank straps.

New Zealand law acknowledges animals as sentient and it’s unacceptable in 2019 to have animals hurt, scarred and killed for fun. How we treat our animals is a reflection on our values as a society.

A Green Party member’s bill that allows New Zealanders to know where their food comes was passed almost unanimously by Parliament today, Green Party MP Gareth Hughes has announced.

“We’ve established that people have a right to know where their food comes from,” Green MP Gareth Hughes said.

“Kiwi consumers will now have greater information so they can exercise their consumer power and choice.

“It’s a good day for New Zealanders and for New Zealand producers.

The Green Party has written to the Environment select committee asking for it to consult the public on banning the private sale and use of fireworks.

“Fireworks cause hundreds of accidents each year, start fires and cause distress and sometimes injuries to animals. It’s time for private sales to fizzle out and be replaced by safer, better, public displays”, Green Party spokesperson for animal welfare Gareth Hughes said today.

The Green Party will propose an amendment to the Crown Minerals Act Amendment Bill to close a current loophole that allows for oil and gas companies to extend their permits for offshore drilling.

The loophole means there is no clear end date on offshore drilling, despite the Government announcing an end to further permits earlier this year.

The Green Party believes animals should not suffer to provide entertainment for people and we are calling for a ban on the use of animals in rodeo events.

“The Green Party is disappointed with NAWACs rodeo report and think waiting for further research and the rodeo association to self-regulate is negligent and will see animals continued to be hurt”, Green Party animal welfare spokesperson Gareth Hughes said today.
