A new official report detailing potentially irreversible impacts of climate change in New Zealand show why the next government must act urgently to cut climate-damaging pollution, the Green Party said today.

The 2017 Atmosphere and Climate report states that climate change is already potentially irreversibly affecting New Zealand. It says that climate impacts to date include:

·         Our glaciers shrinking by almost a quarter of their volume.

·         Coastal seas rising by 22 cm.

KiwiRail’s plan to replace its electric locomotives with a dirty diesel-powered fleet is backwards and bad news for New Zealand, the Green Party said today.

The Green Party understands that KiwiRail will today announce a plan to phase out its 16 electric locomotives responsible for freight between Hamilton and Palmerston North. The electric locomotives will be replaced with Chinese-made diesel locomotives.

The supposedly "business-friendly" National Government is out-of-step with the growing number of New Zealand companies that want stronger action on climate change, the Green Party said today.

More than 50 businesses, leading New Zealanders, and non-governmental organisations today presented an open letter to Climate Change Minister Paula Bennett calling for action on the issue.

The call comes just days after New Zealand’s climate policy was given the lowest ranking of ‘very poor’ in the international Climate Change Performance Index.

Global climate experts have exposed an enormous credibility gap between the National Government's rhetoric on climate change and its actions, the Green Party said today.

New Zealand’s response to climate change has today been labelled ‘inadequate’ for the fourth year in a row by Climate Action Tracker – an international group of climate science researchers.

New Zealand is ranked below the European Union, China, USA and India.

"Climate experts are effectively calling out the National Government for greenwashing," said Green Party MP Julie Anne Genter.

KiwiRail is expected to reveal on Monday whether it will replace its existing fleet of electric locomotives with new electric ones, or revert back to diesel locomotives.

The Green Party today welcomed the Government's campaign to raise the profile of electric vehicles (EVs), but warned that the absence of any plan to make them affordable means EVs will be out of reach for most New Zealanders.

New Zealand needs to push for a much stronger final agreement in the last week of climate talks in Paris, the Green Party said today.

Overnight (NZ time), negotiators submitted a “Draft Paris Agreement”, which ministers will work with from Monday to try and reach a final deal by Friday’s deadline.

“It’s exciting that we’ve reached this point, but the text is still riddled with unresolved issues, and a huge divide remains between developed and developing countries in terms of who should do what,” said Green Party MP Julie Anne Genter from Paris.
