Public input will be sought on proposals to enact the Government’s policy of no new mines on conservation land, Conservation Minister, Eugenie Sage announced today.

Last November, in her Speech from the Throne, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced there would be no new mines on conservation land.

The Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage and Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods, will consult the mining sector, iwi, local government, environmental and community groups, and the wider public, through a discussion document to be released in September.

Thank you, Mr Speaker. So I just sat and listened through Michael Woodhouse's debate speech about all the hospitals that the previous Government—his Government—apparently fixed and ran so that they are functional.

The Green Party today welcomed a call from leaders of seven key environmental organisations for the major political parties to prioritise protecting the environment.

The challenge, supported by Forest & Bird, Fish & Game, Greenpeace, WWF, EDS, Generation Zero, and Ecologic, noted larger than ever public support for protecting the environment, and called on parties to prioritise freshwater, climate and conservation.
