In March this year, tens of thousands of New Zealand school students went on strike to protest a lack of decisive action on climate change.

We are acting now.

The Zero Carbon Bill outlines our plan over the next 30 years to safeguard the future that those school students will inherit.

Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time – perhaps the greatest challenge of all time. Stopping climate change is going to take all of us and it’s going to take everything we’ve got; across communities, businesses, iwi, and government.

Mr President, tena koe.
E nga rangatira, tena koutou.

The government that I am a part of, led by the Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, has been in office for a little over one year.

In that period of time we have pursued an extensive agenda in relation to climate change action.

We have held a nationwide consultation on a new emissions reduction target for 2050, consistent with the 1.5 degree temperature threshold, and will soon present legislation to build the legal and policy framework to deliver it.

To have had a hand in the development of this Budget – the Greens’ first Budget in Government.

To be laying the foundations for a truly sustainable economy, a healthy environment and a fair society.

Mr Speaker,
This is a budget for every kiwi.

And every takahē.

And every kākā.

Those of you who I have met over the years may have heard me say before that my first professional job was at a wee outfit called the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand, back when there was such a thing.
