The National Party is more concerned about the back pocket of property investors than sick kids and the elderly, Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson said today.

“In Aotearoa thousands of kids and the elderly are being admitted into hospital with respiratory diseases linked to mould and damp in their rental property.

“If landlords can only justify an investment by leasing out a property that makes New Zealanders sick, then they shouldn’t be in the business.

The Green Party is calling for the Government to stop sending homeless people into thousands of dollars of debt with the Ministry of Social Development.  Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson says that people at their wits end should not be charged for being put up in emergency housing.

“The use of recoverable loans by MSD has to stop because it is hurting the most vulnerable and makes a mockery of our compassionate approach,” Green Party Co-Leader Marama Davidson said today.

In response to calls for a compulsory energy rating for buildings the Green Party is renewing calls for the building code to take better account of energy efficiency.

“New Zealanders are living in damp and cold homes that have low energy efficiency due to a failure to retrofit our old housing stock and bring it up to modern standards”, Green Co-leader Marama Davidson said today.

“Each and every home in Aotearoa should be meeting high standards for energy efficiency, especially when being rented out.

The Green Party agrees with the Salvation Army that bold new steps are needed to stop a worrying trajectory of increased rent rises and homelessness.

“Home ownership is at its lowest rate since 1951 which means an entire generation is living with renting. 200,000 of these households are living in high financial stress due to unaffordable rent and, worse, we currently have 60,000 people on the very cusp of homelessness living in inadequate and precarious situations. This is not good enough”, Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson said today.

Families living in dilapidated conditions in a boarding house in Whanganui further demonstrates why a Warrant of Fitness for housing is required, Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson said today.

“The Pink Flats, where a single mum is having to bathe her kids in a mouldy bathroom, is a textbook example of why we desperately need a Warrant of Fitness in Aotearoa.

“People who live there have repeatedly asked for repairs and have been ignored. Now children are ill.

The Green Party is celebrating the launch of the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme today, which will deliver warm, dry, healthy homes for a huge number of New Zealanders.

“We’re incredibly happy to see our policy becoming a reality,” says Green Party energy spokesperson Gareth Hughes. “We’ve campaigned for proper home insulation for every Kiwi home for so long, and we’re making it happen in government.

Why is the Minister looking to overseas companies to prefabricate KiwiBuild homes; and what is he doing to promote as much New Zealand-based manufacture as possible?

The Green Party welcomes the belated fronting by Housing New Zealand today on the bogus meth contamination of houses and agrees HNZ should consider repaying tenants costs associated with their evictions.

“Not only were hundreds of tenants evicted on the basis of this bogus testing regime, but to add insult they were charged for it,” Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson said.

“The issue of compensation should be seriously considered. At the very least, HNZ should repay costs around testing.”
