Conservation Minister Nick Smith misled Parliament with his statement that not a single Maui's dolphin has been sighted inside an area opened up by the Government for oil drilling, the Green Party said today.

"Conservation Minister Nick Smith is not telling the truth when he says that no Maui's dolphins have been observed in the area that the Government has opened up for oil and gas exploration," said Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman.

New Zealand households facing increasing costs from rising interest rates and stagnant wage growth are not getting their fair share of economic growth, Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman said today.

Figures released today by Statistics New Zealand show that Gross Domestic Product grew 1.0 percent in the March quarter and 3.3 percent in the year to March.

"Economic growth under National is only benefitting a few," Dr Norman said.

Allowing opencast mining at Denniston is another example of short-sighted environmental vandalism from National, the Green Party said today.

Late yesterday the Government issued an Authority to Enter and Operate (AEO) to Australia's Bathurst Resources Ltd, for its planned opencast coal mine in conservation land on the Denniston Plateau. The AEO means the company can now proceed with initial work on the site.

"Another green light for another environmental travesty," said Green Party mining spokesperson Catherine Delahunty.

I guess I agree with a lot of what my colleague Andrew Little has just said, but we disagree on one point. He said that something is better than nothing, and I do not think that is always true. In this case, we do not agree and we are opposing the bills divided from the Vulnerable Children Bill.

Today's Reserve Bank interest rate hike means home owners with a mortgage of $250,000 will pay $900 a year extra in interest than they did in March, Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman said.

GARETH HUGHES: Kia ora. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou. Kia ora. I rise to take a call in the Crown entities debate to talk about Callaghan Innovation. How we build a smart, innovative economy should be one of the key issues we are all talking about in the coming months. At the moment, there are some great pockets of excellence happening across Aotearoa. There is some amazing stuff happening by Kiwi firms, and I will take my hat off to the Government because there are a few projects that are deserving of public support.

The Green Party has long advocated for ethical investment by the New Zealand Superannuation Fund.  Several companies, in which the Super Fund invests, have been accused of human rights violations, the production of nuclear arms, and causing severe environmental damage.

Today, as we mark World Refugee Day, I look back and think about how lucky we are in New Zealand to experience the diversity and culture that various refugees have brought into this country.

Over the years, I have met with many people who came to New Zealand as refugees. They brought with them a great wealth of culture, experience and knowledge – and they have used it to settle into their new lives here. They have also been very willing to share that knowledge with us- so really, we here in New Zealand can go around the world without leaving our shores.

The Green Party is accusing the Government of systematic inaction over climate change, as New Zealand scientists warn the extreme weather battering the country is a "picture of the future".

"The extremes of weather we're seeing fit with predictions. Climate change is not some distant threat. It is happening now in the form of extreme weather and it is costing communities," said Green Party climate change spokesperson Dr Kennedy Graham.

John Key needs to tell the public why New Zealand is currently involved in a trade deal to benefit Wall Street at the expense of Queen Street, Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman said today.

The text of a 19-page, international trade agreement involving New Zealand has just been published via WikiLeaks. According to the United States Chamber of Commerce, the Trade in Service Agreement (TISA) 'should expand access to foreign markets for United States service industries and ensure they receive national and most-favoured nation treatment'.
