New Zealand cannot tolerate US incarceration of children

The treatment of migrant children and families at the United States border is heart-breaking and intolerable. The Green Party calls on the New Zealand Government to condemn this egregious breach of human rights.

“The mass detention of children and separation from their families as a part of immigration policy is unacceptable,” says Golriz Ghahraman, Green Party human rights spokesperson.

“It is abhorrent to do it as a way to ‘deter’ their parents from seeking asylum or migrating to the United States, and New Zealand must condemn it.”

Maram Davidson, Green Party MP

The Green Party said today nurses have historically been underpaid and undervalued and they deserve to be paid more.

Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson was commenting after it was announced nurses rejected the DHBs’ latest pay offer in their ballot.

“Nurses are totally professional, so for them to reject an offer of 9% over 15 months reveals how undervalued they feel after nine years squeezing by National,” Ms Davidson said. “We support their call for urgent mediation.”

Marama Davidson - Domestic Violence - Victims' Protection Bill - Second Reading

I rise to support with pride the second reading of the Domestic Violence—Victims' Protection Bill.

I will start with the acknowledgment and tautoko to the many members across this whole House, not the least from the Opposition benches, who have been singing, rightfully, my colleague, Jan Logie's, praises, because this is her member's bill.

New Waikeria facility a relief valve as work to reduce prison numbers begins

The Green Party welcomes the adoption of a human rights based approach to the upkeep of the Waikeria prison facility, focused on rehabilitation instead of the American-style mega-prison planned by the last government.

“We know that imprisonment has failed to reduce crime rates or keep our communities safe. New Zealand needs a new approach and we see this decision as a start,” says Green Party corrections spokesperson Golriz Ghahraman.
