Clean Groundwater Bill

The Green Party will make aquifers a matter of national importance to protect our springs, groundwater and underground water sources.

This Members’ Bill will keep our water from underground sources safe from pollution, contamination, and over-extraction.

New Zealanders are hugely concerned about the state of our fresh water – whether it’s the degradation of our swimming spots or our drinking water.

When in government, the Green Party will continue the fight to protect our rivers and lakes from polluters, and from those who see them as a resource to be easily and cheaply exploited, rather than treasured.

By making the protection of groundwater a matter of national importance, as this bill does, we’ll ensure that Ministers and councils give greater weight to its protection in their decision making.

It’s the very least our waterways – and generations of New Zealanders – deserve.
