IEA report shows need for NZ climate plan
An International Energy Agency report out today shows the need for New Zealand to develop a clear and practical plan to reduce domestic greenhouse gas emissions, the Green Party said. “The IEA report has some useful pointers that the Government must act on to reduce fossil fuel burning for energy use and end fossil fuel subsidies immediately,” Green Party energy spokesperson Gareth Hughes said. “New Zealand needs a plan to reduce emissions at home, as well as to keep contributing... -
$367 m Contact pay-out shows cash comes before customers
Contact Energy’s decision to pay nearly 100% of its profit to its shareholders rather than drop retail electricity prices, invest in clean energy technology exports, or pay down debt, shows that it doesn’t put its customers first, the Green Party says. “The National Government has let the electricity market get away on them, and consumers are suffering as a result,” Green Party energy spokesperson Gareth Hughes said. “The Government’s only response is to tell people to shop around but the... -
Greens welcome ‘locked-gate’ policy on Taranaki dump farms
The Green Party has welcomed news that New Plymouth District Council will implement a ‘locked gate’ policy which prevents farmers from grazing cows on oil industry dump sites until the soil has been tested and declared safe. “After years of the National Government claiming that there were no issues with cows grazing on pasture spread with oil and gas waste, it’s great to see New Plymouth District Council stepping up and taking leadership to protect New Zealanders and our clean,... -
Time for Government to back New Zealanders up on climate change
A new survey from Motu shows New Zealanders are taking action on climate change and that its time for the Government to catch up and reduce its emissions, said the Green Party. -
Wellington weather chaos a sign of things to come
Yesterday’s extreme weather, which caused chaos with Wellington’s transport network, will become more commonplace as climate change worsens, and shows the need for urgent Government leadership to prepare for climate change, the Green Party said today. “Scientists warn we will see heavier rainfall and more intense storms and droughts because of climate change, and the Government has a responsibility to assist communities to prepare and adapt,” Green Party Wellington issues spokesperson Gareth Hughes said. “The Government needs to show leadership... -
Maui's dolphin sighted in new oil block
The sighting of a Maui’s dolphin in an area the Government has just opened up to oil and gas exploration shows how willing Energy Minister Simon Bridges is to sacrifice the environment for oil, the Green Party said today. The Maui's Sanctuary was created to help protect Maui’s dolphins, but it overlaps with areas the Government has offered up for exploration this week. A Maui’s dolphin, one of only 55 adult individuals remaining, was spotted in one of these areas.... -
Government arrogantly ignores New Zealanders’ concerns about deep sea drilling
The Government’s block offer announcement of an area almost twice the size of New Zealand and including the home of the critically endangered Maui’s dolphin and other protected conservation areas is further evidence of how out of touch they’ve become, the Green Party said today. -
Demanding smartphone and laptop passwords at the border is unacceptable
Insisting people give up their laptop and smartphone passwords at the border, without a search warrant or due process, is completely unacceptable and goes against common perceptions of privacy, the Green Party said today in response to a discussion document released by the New Zealand Customs Service. -
Privatised power companies too focussed on short-term pay-outs
Partially privatised energy companies are keeping electricity prices artificially high and ignoring international clean energy investment opportunities to ensure private shareholders get big pay-outs, the Green Party said today. Genesis Energy today announced a $172.8 million operating profit, up from $150.6 million, following Meridian Energy’s announcement last week that it will pay a $625 million special dividend to shareholders. “Households must be struggling to understand why their energy bills keep increasing, but the energy companies keep handing over big pay-outs... -
Meridian privatisation lines pockets of investors
The partial privatisation of Meridian Energy has led to higher power prices and sent $625 million worth of bloated profits into the pockets of investors, the Green Party said today. Meridian announced today that revenue had risen 22 percent to $1.3 billion, and that it would pay out an additional special dividend of $625 million over five years. “Meridian was the largest of the power companies that National partially privatised and the Green Party always said that those strategic assets...
