The Green Party welcomes passage of the Government’s Child Poverty Reduction Bill, which lays the foundation for genuinely pulling New Zealand kids out of poverty.
“This Green Party entered into Government with Labour and New Zealand First to compassionately improve the wellbeing of all New Zealanders", Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson said today.
“This bill is walking the talk on just that, and will mean more kids in the coming years will live a happy and fulfilling life.
“A big part of achieving this is knowing the extent of the problem, and taking action to reduce it. To look after all of those kids.
“Former Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei stood in this house and asked countless questions to the former government, utterly frustrated at the refusal to establish official measurements of child poverty and to not set targets.
“So this legislation delivers on her campaign to put child wellbeing at the heart of decision-making.
“No New Zealand kid should be trapped in poverty, it is as simple as that. There is across the board agreement that we can make this happen.
“I look forward to working with our Government partners on making this happen. The passing of this bill just before Christmas is emblematic of the good will and kindness that underscores this work.”
