Rodeo report a disappointment and fails animals

The Green Party believes animals should not suffer to provide entertainment for people and we are calling for a ban on the use of animals in rodeo events.

The Green Party believes animals should not suffer to provide entertainment for people and we are calling for a ban on the use of animals in rodeo events.

“The Green Party is disappointed with NAWACs rodeo report and think waiting for further research and the rodeo association to self-regulate is negligent and will see animals continued to be hurt”, Green Party animal welfare spokesperson Gareth Hughes said today.

“The Government should step in to protect these rodeo animals from pain and mental mistreatment instead of leaving it to the NZ Rodeo Cowboy Association to self-regulate and NAWAC to await further research.

“The report says that the animals do experience pain in various rodeo events like calf roping and steer wrestling and this should be the final word that sees these events banned.

“It is cruel and unnecessary to be putting animals through physical and mental pain for so-called entertainment.

“These rodeo practises wouldn’t be allowed to occur on a farm and their continuance make a mockery of the animal welfare claims we make for our agricultural exports”.
