Public transport is an essential service and helps to tackle the climate crisis by reducing our carbon emissions. But there are barriers to community ownership of our public transport networks. Meaning our bus networks are often owned by overseas investment companies. These companies are more interested in making money than supporting their workers, our communities and our planet.
For example, a major chunk of the bus services in Auckland and Wellington are run by NZ Bus, which is owned by an Australian private equity firm Next Capital. They are ignoring the needs of local bus drivers, the regional council, and our communities.
It just makes sense that local communities should be able to have a say on how local public transport is run.
Will you join our call asking the House of Representatives to remove barriers to public ownership of our public transport networks?
Alongside signing this petition, you can tautoko this kaupapa by supporting our Wellington Bus Drivers with their campaign.
- Tell Next Capital to take the extra GWRC funding and offer a fair deal to Wellington Bus Drivers.
