The Problem

The fuel crisis is costing ordinary people every time they travel. We need transport alternatives that are more affordable, fast, frequent, and reliable.

The rising cost of fuel is getting worse and is putting huge pressure on ordinary people every time they travel. Currently there aren’t enough alternatives to being locked into a car for everyday trips, and our current transport systems are expensive, inefficient, polluting, and slow. This costs people time, money, convenience, and their health.

Successive governments have designed our communities to work best for cars, not people. The lack of investment in buses, trains and bike lanes means our current systems are lacking for all modes of transport, even for people who drive.

New Zealanders spend too much time and money sitting in traffic, filling up the car, and waiting for trains and buses.

Communities have wanted more services and voted for them at the local government level. But the Luxon Government backed out of funding plans for frequent bus services and lower fares in communities like Dunedin, New Plymouth, and Levin.

In recent years, underground light rail and expensive four lane highways have been promised by other parties but not delivered.

There is currently a gap in future rapid transit, with no funding for the Northwest Busway in Auckland or for rapid transit in Christchurch. Too many places in Aotearoa need upgrades, investment, and new services, but our towns and cities have been left without a plan and the funding.

This is not inevitable. We can have nice things, and Auckland’s City Rail Link shows what is possible.

The Green Party will provide free bus and train fares for children, students, Community Service Card holders, and Total Mobility Users, $2 journey caps for everyone else, and deliver upgraded buses and passenger rail in our cities and regions.

The Green Party will roll out comprehensive bus lanes in our three major cities while we work towards building mass rapid transit. We'll immediately support councils in smaller cities and towns to offer real public transport options so that wherever you are, you have real options to choose how you get around.

Our plan will lower day-to-day transport costs, cut congestion, and help people in the cities and regions get where they need to go, regardless of their income or where they live.
