Around the world, democracy is under threat by would-be dictators and corporate power.
Successive governments have meddled with our electoral rules for their own self-interest and failed to curb the influence of big corporate interests in politics.. This government has actively invited those big corporates in to write the rules in their own favour.
The richest few can spend millions trying to influence Ministers, while politicians weaken our donation laws, make it harder to vote and strip thousands of people of their right to vote in breach of their human rights.
The Green Party is committed to a democracy that upholds Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the vision of Matike Mai Aotearoa, creating a decision-making process that reflects genuine partnership.
We can create a more representative democracy by transforming our constitution, expanding voting rights and banning big money from politics.
Our plan
- Resource a national conversation for constitutional transformation that upholds He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi as our founding constitutional documents, utilising Matike Mai Aotearoa to facilitate community discussions.
- Uphold the right to vote by extending the voting age to 16, extending the right to vote to all people in custody and restoring enrolment up to election day.
- Entrench the Māori electoral seats to guarantee Māori representation in Parliament and extend the time in which Māori can switch rolls.
- Reform electoral funding by limiting donations to registered voters, increasing public financing of campaigns and capping a donor’s donations at a level that does not risk donor influence over policy.
- Strengthen the rules and transparency over political lobbying, including through a lobbyist register and a code of conduct.
