NZ has opportunity on UN Security Council

New Zealand has an opportunity to make a major contribution to the strengthening of international law and institutional capacity through its upcoming two-year tenure on the United Nations Security Council, Green Party spokesperson on global affairs, Dr Kennedy Graham said today.

New Zealand has just been elected to one of the Security Council seats for the period 2015-16, winning 145 votes, well above what was needed.

“Membership of the Security Council is good news for New Zealand and offers us a chance to make a major contribution to its strengthening and reform,” Dr Graham said.

“Both the powers and procedural style of the Council are in need of reform

“The question of permanent membership, use of the veto, transparency of decision-making and relationship to other international bodies are all in need of review.

“It will be of paramount importance that New Zealand develops a genuinely independent foreign policy as it explores tough and complex global issues on the Council.

“Two years is a very short period in international politics and so New Zealand will need to be ready to make its contribution right from day one.”

The Green Party will encourage parliamentary deliberation on the issues, reflecting Green policies on United Nations reform and the strengthening of global peace and security.
