Te reo Māori must be a core curriculum topic in all schools by 2025, say Greens

Green Party Co-Leader Marama Davidson has re-affirmed the Party’s commitment to universal te reo in schools, and has announced that the Greens will now work with the education sector on a plan to make the language a core curriculum subject.

“Our vision of a bilingual nation will only be reached when all of us are comfortable and confident with te reo Māori. We have a responsibility to ensure that our indigenous language not just survives, but thrives in Aotearoa, and introducing all children to it at school is one of the best ways to make that happen,” Marama Davidson said.

“The Green Party’s comprehensive te reo policy was developed in conjunction with Māori educators, Māori language experts, and the teacher unions.”

“Our next step is to work with leaders in the sector on the practicalities of making te reo Māori a core curriculum subject in all schools”.

“We’ve seen a failure of leadership from successive Governments. Government has never delivered robust infrastructure so that schools can properly deliver te reo. We need this to happen now, so that our beautiful first language thrives in Aotearoa.

“We welcome this Government’s aim to have comprehensive te reo in schools by 2025. The Green Party is leading the way towards making te reo a core curriculum subject.”

“This commitment to te reo needs to be fully supported by initiatives that increase teaching capability. The Green Party is committed to universal te reo in kura, and Green party policy lays out the broader plan to make this a reality.”

“Ko te kaupapa here reo a te Pāti Kākāriki he mea whakarite ngātahi e ngā mūmū kaiako Māori, e ngā mūmū reo Māori, e ngā uniana kaiako anō hoki.”

“Ko tā tātou mahi ināianei ko te mahi tahi ki ngā kaiārahi o te rāngai e pā ana ki ngā whakaritenga e ū ai te reo hei kaupapa ako matua i ngā kura katoa”.

“Kua kite i te mūhore o ngā Kāwanatanga i roto i ngā tau. Kua kore te Kāwanatanga e whakatakoto i tētahi tūāpapa pakari, e taea ai e ngā kura te reo te whakaako tika. Me pērā ināianei, e puāwai ai tō tātou reo ātaahua tuatahi i Aotearoa nei”.
