Tide has turned on National after Northland nightmare

The National Party’s loss in the Northland by-election is proof that the tide has turned on an increasingly out of touch Government, says the Green Party.

The National Party’s loss in the Northland by-election is proof that the tide has turned on an increasingly out of touch Government, says the Green Party.

“The tide has turned on National,” said Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei.

“The Green Party congratulates Winston Peters on winning this seat from National. We agree with Mr Peters that his election is a clear message to the National Government in Wellington.

“This is a deeply embarrassing loss for National in a traditionally safe seat. The loss of Northland shows how out of touch the National Government has become with ordinary New Zealanders.

“That John Key thought his bridge and broadband bribes would work in Northland just shows how out of touch he is with ordinary Kiwis.

“Hungry kids can’t eat bridges.

“The fact that John Key and Steven Joyce didn’t see this defeat coming shows just how out of touch they are. They spend too much time pandering to big businesses and overseas interests rather than listening to everyday New Zealanders.

“Steven Joyce has gone from Mr Fix It to Mr Fail It. The shambles Steven Joyce has overseen with the SkyCity deal, combined with this historic loss, show he isn’t the master strategist he likes to think he is.

“This loss has all the hallmarks of a Government starting the steady slide out of office. The tide is definitely turning,” said Mrs Turei.
