A new survey from Motu shows New Zealanders are taking action on climate change and that its time for the Government to catch up and reduce its emissions, said the Green Party.
The Motu Economic and Public Policy Research shows that a huge 87% of New Zealanders are concerned about climate change, with the strong majority saying they will take action to fight climate change themselves.
“New Zealanders are already taking action on climate change but our Government is lagging behind and is failing to do anything to reduce our emissions, said Green Party MP Gareth Hughes.
“National has lost touch with New Zealanders who care about climate change and are worried about the devastating impacts it could have on their lives if no action is taken.
“Right now the Government is consulting on whether it should take action on climate change, they need to listen to the results of the survey and get in step with the demand for action from New Zealanders.
“We need to sign up to a target of reducing our emissions by at least 40% by 2030 to do our fair share in helping to fight climate change.
“Climate change is a threat to our economy and all the things that we love about New Zealand. The Government needs to back up those New Zealanders who are fighting climate change but getting no help from their Government.
“Responding to climate change is worth our while. Our economic success depends on the proven technologies that can address climate change and create jobs.
“The Green Party has a plan for fighting climate change and making the most of the huge opportunities that a cleaner greener future offers for our country."
