Govt’s ETS auction fails for the eighth time

Another Emissions Trading Scheme auction has failed, throwing the Government’s failure on climate into stark focus.

“Ironically, the most effective climate policy under Luxon’s Government is their economic incompetence. Their decisions have seen successive ETS auctions fail, ultimately meaning units end up being cancelled,” says the Green Party Co-leader and Climate Change spokesperson, Chlöe Swarbrick.

“This Government has slashed climate policies and promised we’ll somehow meet our climate targets by relying on market mechanisms, which their own advice tells them will hurt the poorest New Zealanders the most.

“Will the Climate Minister please stand up? Or is he too busy signing off climate-burning fossil fuel subsidies with his other hand?

“The Greens have shown how we can rapidly reduce climate changing emissions, reduce the cost of living and improve our quality of life with He Ara Anamata, our Emissions Reduction Plan.

“We would stop pollution at the source, instead of gaming the system at the cost of our biodiversity and food-growing land by betting on pine tree offsetting, says Chlöe Swarbrick.
