Kia ora Minister Bishop and Minister Potaka,
We’re writing to you to express our deep concern at Kāinga Ora attempting to sell 168 homes and 25 sections across the country this close to the election.
We believe that selling this land and housing only weeks before a possible change in government is unfair to all those people desperate to get into a Kāinga Ora home and, ultimately, the owners of those properties, the people of Aotearoa New Zealand.
We believe it would show good faith on the part of your government to order Kāinga Ora to put the sale processes for all these properties on hold until the outcome of the election is known.
The properties listed for sale on Kāinga Ora’s website include the 36 homes in Wellington’s Nuku St. At a time when homelessness is increasing and there are 600 Wellingtonians on the social housing register, the decision to sell this significant property will do nothing to reduce Pōneke’s urgent need for more social housing.
We support the call from the group Strathmore Housing Action for the property to be retained in public ownership and redeveloped into desperately needed social housing as per Kāinga Ora’s original plan.
