The Green Party says other parties should get behind a wealth tax after a new Ipsos survey shows almost two-thirds of New Zealanders back the party's policy.
“New Zealanders know our infrastructure is falling apart and they know that the super wealthy are not paying their fair share. They want a country that works for all of us, which is why they want a wealth tax,” says Green Party Co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick.
The latest Ipsos Issues Monitor surveyed 1,003 people between 3 and 11 September. It found 64% support a 2.5% tax on net assets above $10 million, with the family home exempt, while only 26% oppose it.
“Nearly half of the coalition's own voters support a wealth tax. Luxon, Seymour and Peters are standing in the way of a policy their own supporters want. That tells you everything about who they serve.”
“Right now, the richest pay $9 in tax for every $100 they make, while a teacher pays $22. The Greens would give 96% of earners an income tax cut, paid for not by cuts to public services, but ensuring the super wealthy pay their fair share.”
“The Greens will unlock the resources necessary to fix what’s broken, lower the cost of living and climate changing emissions to improve everyone’s quality of life. That’s what responsible government looks like,” says Swarbrick.
