The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand strongly condemns the extreme and oppressive abortion law introduced in the state of Texas this week.

“We know when governments restrict access to safe abortion services people with unwanted pregnancies are forced into really dangerous situations and many die” Green Party spokesperson for women Jan Logie said today.

“Families thrive when pregnant people can choose when and if to have children. No one thrives when they are forced to carry unwanted pregnancies. It is so important we all stand up for the human rights of bodily autonomy and the right to choose when and if to have children.”

“These restrictions are alarming and dangerous. We call on the United States Government and the State Legislator to reverse this gross violation of human rights law immediately. The Government of Aotearoa New Zealand must use all our diplomatic channels to condemn violations such as this, wherever they happen” says Greens spokesperson for foreign affairs and human rights Golriz Ghahraman.

“We know that any restrictions on access to fundamental health rights will disproportionately impact those already marginalised. We stand with black and brown communities, disabled, and rainbow persons who will be most impacted by this archaic law.”

“Dehumanising laws that degrade women and pregnant persons anywhere are an affront to human rights everywhere.”
