The real cost of Willis’ failed economic strategy: empty chairs at Christmas

The Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update (HYEFU) shows Nicola Willis’ “year of growth” has not only totally failed to deliver but has come at a steep cost to regular New Zealanders.

“Today confirmed what regular New Zealanders can already feel: Nicola’s ‘growth at all costs’ mentality is coming at their expense, with significant downward revisions in most economic indicators in the Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update (HYEFU)” says Green Party Co-Leader and Finance spokesperson, Chlöe Swarbrick.

“The HYEFU shows unemployment increasing next year–with everyday New Zealanders taking the hit. This Christmas, many across the country will notice who isn’t sitting around the table. Thousands of friends and whānau have left, because in Luxon’s Aotearoa they can’t find a decent job with good wages, buy a home for their family, or access the doctor when they need it.

“Luxon’s short term sugar hits–selling out to overseas mining and oil gas companies while sidelining small businesses desperately seeking investment in productive, long-term economic development–treat our country like a quarry, not a world class economy.

“New Zealanders need responsible fiscal management from our leaders–to manage the real economy, not just abstracted numbers on a page. Under a Green Government, people and planet come before profit, through a fairer tax system and a public investment in the infrastructure we–and our economy–needs.

“The numbers are clear. Willis’ economic strategy has failed, and the cost is being paid by New Zealanders,” says Chlöe Swarbrick.
