Tunnel Vision

The Government, led by Transport Minister Chris Bishop, are proposing to spend up to $3.8 billion on a transport plan that includes two new car tunnels. One will be built through Mount Victoria and the other under The Terrace.

We agree that Wellington has traffic issues. We know that it is particularly difficult for people living in the east of Wellington.

We want people to be able to get from A to B quickly and cheaply. We know that people want faster, afffordable, reliable public transport. We know that people want safe footpaths and separated cycling infrastructure.

We know that the approach of “just add one more lane” will not, and has never, worked.

Especially here in Wellington where we have the highest public transport use in the entire country.

We know what we need, and we do not need the Government dictating to us what our city needs.

Our city did not vote for this Government. We are baffled as to why they would continue to try and ram through an eye-wateringly expensive proposal at the cost of more affordable, more heavily utilised public and active transport and encouraging walking.

Making public transport more accessible and affordable for people also frees up car lanes for those who need to drive – it’s a win-win!
