Mr President, tena koe.
E nga rangatira, tena koutou.

The government that I am a part of, led by the Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, has been in office for a little over one year.

In that period of time we have pursued an extensive agenda in relation to climate change action.

We have held a nationwide consultation on a new emissions reduction target for 2050, consistent with the 1.5 degree temperature threshold, and will soon present legislation to build the legal and policy framework to deliver it.

The Green Party has always been ahead of the times especially on issues such as climate change and the environment.

Yesterday you heard from James and Marama about how as part of the Labour, New Zealand First and Green government we are achieving wins in important areas like this.

This party is the beating green heart of this Government.

My first campaign was the 1990 General Election. I was sixteen and in my last year at Wellington High School. I did a bit of volunteering for the Greens’ Wellington Central Candidate, Stephen Rainbow.

The centrepiece of his campaign was – get this – a plan to put light rail from the Railway Station out to the Airport.

Tena koutou katoa and, because it’s Cook Islands language week, kia orana.

Welcome.

Today we are launching Indicators Aotearoa New Zealand and this gives effect to the commitment in the Green Party-Labour Party Confidence and Supply Agreement to develop a comprehensive set of environmental, social and economic sustainability indicators.

Our Government is committed to more accurate, broader measures of wellbeing.

Let me reassure the members of the Opposition that this is not a dream, there is nothing wrong with their television sets, and the red pill won’t do anything, because this is reality, and this is what a real government looks like.

A government with purpose. A government which takes positive action. A government which is united, focused, and getting things done.

E te Māngai o te Whare, tēnā koe.

Ki a koutou ōku hoa Pāremata, huri noa i te Whare, ngā mihi o te tau hou ki a koutou katoa.

Mr Speaker,
It makes me immensely proud – and my Green Party colleagues immensely proud – to be a part of this Government.

To have had a hand in the development of this Budget – the Greens’ first Budget in Government.

To be laying the foundations for a truly sustainable economy, a healthy environment and a fair society.

Mr Speaker,
This is a budget for every kiwi.

And every takahē.

And every kākā.
